Bon voyage, little tank.

Bon voyage, little tank.

And now we close our summer o' tanks with a seamed and lightly blocked Rowan Calmer Tank! You don't have to be Isaac Newton to know that one needs more than a thread of elastic to keep this strapless tank up. The tank doesn't fall down when worn, but doing the limbo while wearing it with nothing underneath is not something I'd recommend unless one wants to give a burlesque show. Despite the shapings at the edges, seaming this tank was easy (include selvedges, even though Kim Hargreaves tells you not to) and did I already mention that I'm soooooo glad I added that elastic? I also recommend that minimal blocking be done so that the tank retains its elasticity. It's a good fit, and when I tried it on I danced around in it to see how it would hold up. It did slip down a bit, but not low enough to earn me a beaded necklace at Mardi Gras. All in all, I'm happy with the way it came out, and it's now winging its way to my sister complete with "hand knit by skinnyrabbit" label sewn in.

That's right! As much as I like this tank it was never intended to be for me. I knit it for my sister, who saw this design in January and mentioned to me that she liked it and the way the model wears it with the lacy top underneath. Enjoy it, little sis!

As is the custom chez skinnyrabbit, action shots are obligatory and the ones for this top may be found here. However, this tank is very body-hugging, and while it does look good on its own I personally would wear it only if I could wear it layered. As this is not something I'd wear on its own in public for no reason other than I'd feel self-conscious [oh, to be 25 again and not give a rat's arse!], the action shots of me modeling the tank are not available for the whole world wide web to see but limited to viewing by people I know and frequent visitors who comment regularly [which always gives us a chance to get you know you]. Registering is required, but I'll grant access quickly. *Update: Registering is closed and these photos are no longer available for viewing.

WOW - that looks gorgeous. Lucky old lil sis is all I have to say. the stitch definition looks really good in the calmer yarn. I've been looking forward to seeing this finished!!
It's great! Thanks, sis! The bestest birthday gift ever! Don't worry, I plan to wear it without anything underneath it, hoping of course you added enough elastic, as my lolitas are about the size of cherries. It's a beautifully done tank and I will wear it well over here in the winter, when it's cool enough to actually walk outside without melting. Just in time for Ramadan, too! I'll be very snappy-looking! I'll take some photos of the tank once I receive it so you can post them (I'll put on my dancing shoes!). Thanks! (Haven't I got the greatest sister?) (Snap.) Love, Suzie
Hooray for magic elastic! The tank looks wonderful on. When it was lying flat, it was hard to imagine how it would fit. But it really is lovely. And I'm sure that the Calmer yarn is a dream up against your skin. Hope your sister loves it! What a great way to end the summer tank season.
Wow, are you sure we aren't related somehow? I mean we look so alike, me with my blonde hair and you will your dark hair. We practically twins! You're a dear sister and a wonderful knitter.
wow, that is beautiful. you are a knitting goddess. maybe one day i will do cables....your sis is a lucky girl!
"oh, to be 25 again and not give a rat's arse!"... Say, aren't you 24? Guess you're not old enough to give a "rat's arse!" Just teasing a little. Beautiful tank, a little more practical with an elastic thanks to your good thinking. Good work! Bisou.
Very nice. Another success.
looks gorgeous - I hope I'm turning out products as nice as yours someday! sigh...
this is really gorgeous, and excellent call on the elastic (although I think even with the elastic, I would wimp out on wearing this one... but it sure is pretty). thank god my sister doesn't read your site, considering how long her top has been taking!
Gorgeous work, as always, Becky! What a lucky sister!
It turned out fantastic! Hey, how would you like to adopt me as your sister...my birthday's coming up in a few months. ;) Now it has inspired me to get working on the tube top I was trying to design a little while ago. BTW, how did you do the elastic? Did you double strand with a thin piece, or did you incorporate it some other way?
I just finished knitting this tank myself and I agree, it does need a little more than elastic thread. I wish that I had decided on knitting this top after yours was finished because all of the tips you gave (like knitting selvedges) would have helped me out. I ended up having difficulty with my seaming....live and learn.
looks great! :-)
I have been a regular reader for quite a while now and thought I would stop in and say what a beautiful tank that is! Your sister certainly is lucky!!
Wow! That looks fab. Nice to know your lucky sister appreciates it too.
That tank looks great! Though it's probably not easy to wear (strapless....) The elastic is a good idea, and although I haven't seen the action pictures (yet?), I'm sure it keeps it on the right place! So, what's next on your needles?
Where's the rest of the shot? You know. The above-the-elastic bit? ;-)
Wow, it looks great! Your sister is a lucky lady. It does look a billion times better on than lying flat... and it looks great lying flat. :)
congrats to suzie! :) i am psyched to see that made, now i just have to squint my eyes a little and imagine it in the laurel color of calmer.... and then three years from now i'll be wearing it! :) that is my estimated time of knitting due to current size of stash :)
Thanks for the kind comments, everyone! Dani, the elastic I used is just single elastic thread woven into two of the last rows. It was an afterthought, so I didn't knit it into the garment, but used an embroidery needle. It still works well, though, because I seamed the garment after I weaved the elastic into the edges. I took shots before sending the top and I'll upload them later so you can see.
